CCI-Hub, LMP Distributes Solar Chest Freezers Nationwide

March 11-15, 2024 – the Cold Chain Innovation (CCI) Hub deployed 15 units of solar chest freezers in Abra, Sorsogon and Cebu, together with the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP).

LMP, the umbrella organization of all the municipalities in the Philippines, is one of the Demo Project grantees under the Global Partnership for Improving the Food Cold Chain in the Philippines (FCC) project implemented by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and ATMOshpere. Demo Projects are expected to generate business models for energy efficient and sustainable cold chain operations.

“These chest freezers are run by solar energy so there’s no electricity cost. Each unit has a battery storage which proves to be very useful for areas with intermittent electricity supply, even in off-grid areas. Piloting this technology in the country is a product of a collaborative partnership between MagicAire and CCI-Hub. MagicAire is paving the way to showcase the many benefits of this green innovation in the Philippines”, said Sofia Co, CEO of MagicAire Industries, Inc.

The Philippines has a total of 1,489 municipalities. LMP deployed the units in the municipalities of Barcelona, Sorsogon; La Paz, Abra; and, Daanbantayan, Cebu. These municipalities were chosen based on their profiles and needs.

Barcelona, Sorsogon is a 5th class coastal municipality wherein fisheries is a major industry. With the solar chest freezers, fisherfolk in the municipality will be able to increase the shelf life of their catch through its Community Fish Landing Center.

La Paz, Abra is also a 5th class municipality in northern Luzon’s mountainous area wherein agriculture plays a central role in its local economy. However, their food security is threatened by increasing number of typhoons and drought. To preserve their produce, farmers will now be able to utilize the freezers at the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Center.

Daanbantayan, Cebu’s constituents will also benefit from the Demo Project through the availability of solar cooling solution  in their public market which will be used by market suppliers and vendors.

“The municipalities of La Paz in Abra, Barcelona in Sorsogon, and Daanbantayan in Cebu have been strategically selected for their potential to drive positive change within their communities and regions. This initiative exemplifies our unwavering commitment to fostering sustainable solutions that empower local farmers, fishermen, and food producers who rely on effective cold chain infrastructure to preserve perishable goods”, said LMP Executive Director Andrea Loriaga. “As we have more than 832 coastal municipalities, we eagerly anticipate expanding the reach of this initiative to more municipalities across the nation”, she added.
