Rise Against Hunger Philippines to Rescue Food Using Clean Cooling Technology

Rise Against Hunger Philippines, Inc. (RAHP) is a non-profit organization promoting food security by supporting feeding in safety net programs, crisis relief and agriculture and income generating activities of vulnerable communities.

According to the World Food Programme, one in ten households in the Philippines are food insecure, and 27% of children under 5 suffer from stunting or malnutrition. Stunting hinders children to reach their physical and cognitive potential, and it has been identified as a cause for poor performance in school.

In parallel, food loss has been a major concern as the agriculture sector fails to distribute its produce efficiently. In areas considered as “food baskets”, spoilage from harvests of vegetables could go as high as 50% because of high transportation costs that the smallholder farmers could not afford. Rise Against Hunger Philippines address these problems by rescuing food and distributing it to families who need it the most.

In support of this cause, the Global Partnership for Improving the Food Cold Chain in the Philippines (FCC) project subsidized Embraco R290 Chiller and Freezer Cold Storages for the organization. The equipment will support the RAHP food bank at the Nueva Vizcaya Agricultural Terminal where rejected vegetables will be bartered for shelf-stable grocery items to help compensate farmers as well as provide them with alternative food sources.
